The quest for the German Cup
ended in Round 3 for VfL Wolfsburg as they blew a home match and lost
in the PK's, apparently watching too much footage of the Dutch team
in the Euros earlier in the year.
Heading out the Bremen to play
the Werder Bremen Amateurs, die Wölfe were lucky to escape with
the win. The lone goal came thanks to Zoltar Sebescen midway
through the second half.
Hertha Berlin traveled to the
friendly confines of VfL Stadion and Wolfsburg started the scoring
early. Jonathan Akpoborie got things rolling in with a 9th
minute goal. Although Hertha tied the score a few minutes
later, Brian O'Neil would get the game winner in the 30th
minute. Krystof Nowak added the insurance goal in the 83rd
minute to help Wolfsburg advance to the next round.
Drawing a 2.Bundesliga team at
home in the Round 3 appeared to be a good draw. BUT anything
can happen in Cup games and VfL learned again the hard way.
Although dominating the game and the scoring chances, VfL Wolfsburg
found themselves deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of regulation.
Going into overtime, one mistake can kill you and in the 116th, they
made that mistake allowing Goran Milovanovic to score what would be
the winning goal. Luckily in the German Cup, OT is not Golden
Goal so die VfL still had a chance to tie and only 4 minutes later,
Charles Akonnor stepped up to knot the score at 1-1. PK's
followed and Rische & Akonnor weren't able to convert.
Reitmaier was able to stop one, but not two and Wolfsburg lost the
PK's 3-4.
