With both the 1.Bundesliga team
and the amateur team in the Cup, there was much to get excited about
& die VfL didn't disappoint.
The first round was full of
excitement as die Wölfe played a German Cup home/away weekend.
The big boys were in Magdeburg to face the regional side 1.FC
Magdeburg and the amateurs home hosting the migthy team of BVB, who
at the time were # 1 in the Bundesliga table 4-0 and with 10 goals
for and none against.
As expected, Maric,Petrov and
the boys cruised to an easy 1-6 win but it take 1.FC Magdeburg to
score a goal to get the VfL in the game. What happened the next day
though, no one would have expected. The amateur side shocked die
Ruhrland with a 1-0 win over BVB on a 65th minute goal by
Vandreite..it was a shame only 5,166 were on hand to witness it.
Unfortunately for the amateurs,
their cup runneth over as they got blasted at home 0-4 by
2.Bundesliga side Hannover 96. A day earlier though, the big boys
behind goals from Müller, Rische & Plassnegger cruised to an
easy 3-0 home win over the relegated 2.Bundesliga side of SpVgg
Unterhaching. The win set up a clash in München with FC Bayern.
Heading into the game, it was
very possible to conceive a first ever victory of FCB. With recent
results in the form of wins of Schalke, Leverkusen & a 2 goal
down tie at FCB, Maric & company were playing some good ball. AND
they took the early lead in the 13th minute on a goal from Ponte. But
as they always do, the bastards of FC Hollywood came back and scored
goals back to back right before the end of the half in minute 44 &
45 to crush VfL and their hopes of advancing...
