UEFA Cup

So close.... So close...

What a year! UEFA Cup qualification and a great Cup Run that just ran short. For the second time in the club's history, they reached the semi-finals. This time, however, they were unfortunate and lost 0-1 at home vs Werder Bremen.

The Cup run looked to be over as soon as it began. Twice in Round 1, Karlsruher had a 2 goal lead only to eventually blow the game. Goals for the VfL were scored by Baumgart, Juskowiak, Kleeschätzky & Akonnor.

The next round was a difficult struggle with fellow Bundesliga'er Nürnberg. The game was scoreless after 90 minutes. In the Extra Time, the VfL exploded for three goals; 1 by Juskowiak an 2 by Präger.

Round 3 was a tilt against 2. Bundesliga Bielefeld. VfL easily brushed them aside with a 3-1 victory. An own goal in the 49th minute led to Bielefeld's downfall. The other goals were scored by Präger & Akonnor.

VfL got lucky in the Quarter-Finals and drew Sportfreunde Siegen of the Regional Leagues. Siegen was the home team, so all the makings were there for the underdog upset. However, Wolfsburg would have none of it as they trounced Siegen 3-1 on two goals by Juskowiak and another from Claudio Reyna.

The Semi-Finals drew Wolfsburg playing home against Werder Bremen. VfL had plenty of chances but couldn't convert as luck did not seem to be on their side that day. A 52nd minute from Bode sent Bremen through and onto German Cup victory as they beat FC Bayern in the final.

To add insult to injury, a few days later in League play, Wolfsburg beat Bremen..........
